"You Don't Look Like You're in Pain"

This work explores the psychological toll of living with pain that others cannot fully see or understand. It is rooted in my experience of repeatedly describing severe chronic pain only to have it dismissed as anxiety, oversensitivity, or something expected to endure. Pain scales, medical questionnaires, and moments of vulnerability often became performative rituals that rarely changed the outcome of my care. Over time, I became practiced at appearing calm while in extreme pain because chronic illness does not pause life around you. The piece reflects the quiet endurance, dissociation, and emotional fatigue that can develop when suffering becomes both constant and invisible.
